The "new bank details" email (business email compromise)

Criminals get into a real email account (yours, a client's, or a vendor's), wait for a big payment, then send new wire instructions. In June 2026 a federal jury convicted two people in a scheme that took more than $25M from 2020 to 2024 by diverting real estate, vendor, loan, and inheritance payments (IRS Criminal Investigation press release, June 11, 2026; convicted by a federal jury in June 2026; awaiting sentencing as of October 20, 2026). By the numbers: 24,768 BEC complaints and $3,046,598,558 in reported losses in 2025 (FBI IC3 2025 Internet Crime Report). Staff rule: any change to payment details gets a call back on a number already on file.

"BEC" means business email compromise: a scammer breaks into or fakes a work email to steal money.

What it is, and what it isn't

The Close Call Report is general education for your own staff. It is not legal, money, tax, compliance, or cybersecurity advice. It is not a security service, a security check, monitoring, or a training certificate. On its own, it does not meet any training or security rule your firm must follow (for example, the FTC Safeguards Rule or HIPAA). No guarantee. It can't stop every scam. We won't use your name or quotes unless you say yes in writing. You or we can end it anytime by email. North Carolina law applies. See the full disclaimer.
